Get strings with a polymer coating. They do not hurt the fingers as much. Don't give up when things are hard to learn. As someone who is self taught on the guitar I can tell you it can be frustrating. When you feel you have hit this point, take a break. Do not expect to master it over night. If you are learning on an electric, keep the overdrive off because it makes things sound weird in the beginning. Learn the basics before you try to turn into the next guitar star.
